Tongue-Tie (Ankyloglossia)

About Tongue-Tie (Ankyloglossia)

Ankyloglossia, commonly called tongue-tie is a condition that is present at birth that limits the range of motion of the tongue.

When a tongue-tie is present it’s due to an unusually short or tight band of tissue that is called the lingual frenulum. This tissue connects the floor of the mouth to the underside of the tongue. A person that has a tongue-tie may find it difficult to stick there tongue out from there mouth. In young children a tongue-tie may affect the way the child speaks, eats and swallows, as well as cause possible interference with breastfeeding.

Treatment Options

Sometimes a tongue-tie may not cause any problems. Some cases however may require a very simple surgical procedure to correct the condition. The procedure for children is known as a Pediatric Frenectomy and is performed in the physician’s office with a local anesthetic.
